    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    What is Pilates?

Pilates is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work.”
    -Joseph H. Pilates

Joseph Pilates developed the Pilates Method in the 1920s to integrate the mind and body. The key fundamentals are balance, focus, control, the centre of awareness, fluid movements, and breathing. In addition, Pilates strengthens the core, which improves flexibility, coordination, and acute awareness. The repertoire is performed on specialised equipment using springs for resistance or as a mat class. Pilates involves not just the muscles but the entire person. Pilates will build and improve stamina, posture, alignment, and core strength for elite performance in daily activities for everyone—from an athlete to a mother.

What's the difference between Pilates and Yoga?

The basic ideas of yoga include meditation, concentration, breathing and controlled movement. This attempts to harmonize one’s body with the soul in a spiritual way.

Pilates, on the other hand, represents the idea that through a controlled and conscious execution of an exercise sequence, a healthy body is created, resulting in better body awareness.

Will Pilates help me lose weight?

Pilates is well-known for producing long, lean, fit bodies. In addition, Pilates can help you lose weight and look better in a variety of ways:

    • Calories are burned during exercise, and your body type and level of exertion determine the number of calories you burn.
    • Pilates, which builds lean muscle mass, is one of the best ways to increase your calorie-burning potential.
    • Pilates also shapes and tones the body!
    • Beautiful posture is one of the best ways to look and feel thinner. Pilates emphasises length and good alignment to create a leaner appearance.
    • Participating in an exercise program, such as Pilates, boosts self-esteem and raises lifestyle awareness. Both are linked to weight loss.
    • Pilates is an energising workout that can help you maintain energy levels throughout the day. However, Pilates is not typically performed as aerobic exercise. As a result, some people enjoy combining Pilates with aerobic/cardio exercise to maximise weight loss.

    Is Pilates suitable for beginners?

Yes, Pilates can be tailored to people of all fitness levels, from novices to advanced practitioners. However, to ensure proper technique and avoid injury, beginning with a beginner’s class or working with a qualified instructor is always recommended.

What's the difference between working out on the equipment and the Pilates mat classes?

Mat classes focus on core work, require you to support your body, and are challenging. Pilates equipment gives you a frame that is often more helpful than a mat but can be more difficult when springs are added or removed. When working with the equipment, it can also efficiently target and tone specific areas of your body.

What is involved in the initial private session? Is it just a consultation, or will I get a workout?

It is both a consultation and a workout. I will assess your specific body needs and personal goals during the session and begin teaching you the fundamentals of Pilates. Because it is new, you will work slowly, but it will be a significant challenge. Nevertheless, you’ll love it, and I’ll advise you on the next steps.

How often should I do Pilates each week?

The ideal practice of Pilates is three times per week. However, it would be best to consider time, finances, stress level and burning out. I suggest starting with one session (100% more than you are doing now!) and adding more sessions when possible. You will see results quickly if you do more sessions each week.

What style of Pilates do you teach?

I am a classical Peak Pilates Comprehensive Teacher, teaching on classical Pilates equipment from Pilates Scandinavia, similar to Gratz Equipment, and I am a member of Pilates Suisse.

Is there a 24-hour cancellation policy? What if I get sick or have an emergency?

I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. This is because I run a professional studio, reserve the time, and keep it available for each client, and they are booked by the hour in each shift. So 24 hours allows me to book another client and fill that void. Unforeseen emergencies can arise; however, traffic, work, and not feeling well are not considered emergencies. Please always cancel ahead of time if you foresee that happening.

How long do I need to do Pilates to see a difference in my body?

In less than one month, you will feel and hopefully even visually see a difference. Of course, everyone responds differently, but beautiful changes will happen if you commit to doing Pilates every week!

“10 sessions- Feel the difference. 20 sessions- See the difference. 30 sessions- Have a new body!”
    -Joseph Pilates

Is Pilates only focused on the core?

Everything you do in Pilates is supported from the core (transverse abdominals, pelvic floor, spinal muscles, and diaphragm comprise the core). Pilates is all about alignment with the focus on breath, balance, flexibility, coordination, control, stamina, toning, posture and overall health. However, every exercise is a full-body workout.

I have herniated discs in my back. Can I do Pilates, and will it be good for my back?

Yes, Pilates is fantastic for back issues! Pilates can help in back pain treatment mainly in two ways. The first is by strengthening your muscles and making them more flexible, while the second is by improving your posture. Pilates enables your joints and muscles to become stronger and more flexible. Doing so will make them tough enough to withstand the strain and other stresses as you do your regular activities. When your muscles are stronger, they can withstand injury better. In addition, when the muscles are more flexible, you have less risk of straining them when you contort your body into awkward positions. In this regard, Pilates would help you in your back pain treatment.

Stronger and more flexible muscles would help prevent back pain from occurring again. One of the leading causes of back pain is poor posture. A person’s poor posture, whether standing or sitting, contributes to the unnecessary strain on the muscles, eventually making them feel pain and discomfort. A person who does Pilates exercises would be able to improve their posture because of the movements and training that they do. The exercises would make it easier for the person to stand straight, not slouch, and avoid other poor positions contributing to back pain.

I recently had surgery. Can I do Pilates?

Yes, depending on the procedure. Your doctor’s medical release is required. I will be able to work with you to begin strengthening and getting you back to your best self once you have received clearance!
